The driving force behind my paintings is an enduring love of the natural world, in the spirit of creation, and its emotional resonance over time that manifests itself in our relationship with nature. Much of the wonder and appreciation of the natural world I developed as a result of my education, which includes a Bachelor of Science degree in applied arts (medical/scientific illustration) and masters work in art therapy, and nearly 40 years as a medical illustrator and designer.

I utilize various media when painting, illustrating, and designing my work, allowing me to explore my subject matter via expressive color, luminosity, and gestural mark making. My most profound source of inspiration comes from the art of the great masters of the Renaissance. I am compelled to create when viewing their precision and artistry, their expressive subjects – documenting and recording their deepest spiritual beliefs and toils of daily life. Their often massive artistic documentation of theological conscripts as they interpreted them have left such a massive impact on the art world which have lasted over two-thirds of a millennium. An impressive fete.

To me, the notion of deeply connecting with the natural world through art is equally an impressive fete, and it is central in my process. Leaning on my drive for capturing realism, I revel in visually documenting the soul of an animal through its eyes, the feeling of freedom embodied in the splash of running horses through the surf, the endless rise and fall of the ocean, the diminutive curiosity of a honey bee among brilliant flowers. These are all experiences that can shape the development of human connection and relationship to nature and I am compelled to put them on canvas or paper.
